Courtyard entrance and security for Library building

In response to Tim's post and for newer employees:

I thought that this February 21st message sent out in an email by Kara on behalf of Katherine regarding the doors would be helpful. This was sent out to everyone in the Library building and to Public Safety.



To all parties concerned,

As most of you know, we have been experiencing problems with the courtyard entrance and exit doors for the library building on the weekends.

From what we can best determine with the help from the Center for Academic Success staff, they are being locked on Friday night and then either Friday evening as people leave the building or Saturday morning as people come in to work they are not being relocked or they are not being closed properly, which leaves them open. Considering the doors are not the easiest doors to lock and the number of people who have keys to access these doors this is not that surprising.

This is of great concern for the library since this means the building and therefore the materials and some of our offices are not as secure as we wish them to be. But since we have no control of who has the ability to enter the building and we would not wish to hinder anyone from coming in to work, we have decided that we can no longer be held responsible for the outer doors of the building.

To clarify, this does not mean that we will no longer lock them when we close the building. We will continue to lock the doors every Friday night, and if the doors are open on Saturday when we open, we will report it to Public Safety. We feel at this time that this is all we can do.

We are asking that you understand our position and help us keep these doors secure. If you notice that they are unlocked when you come in on a weekend, please let Public Safety know so that they can lock the doors. Or if you have a key, lock them yourself and then let Public Safety know that you did so.

I think if we are all a little more diligent this issue will soon be resolved. We appreciate your understanding of our position regarding this matter.
